Contributing to Community Vitality
Con Edison has a long history of committing to our communities. The company also supports hundreds of local organizations whose activities advance strong and vibrant communities. The company carefully chooses these groups based on their ability to develop education initiatives, training, and other programs and events to enrich the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
Each New York City's borough, and Westchester County, is home to a Con Edison of New York Public Affairs office. Public Affairs staff build relationships with community leaders, host community events, and participate in the lives of the dynamic and diverse neighborhoods that make up the New York metropolitan region.
Supporting Economic Development
Con Edison has a long history of committing to our communities, carefully choosing local organizations to support that enrich the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
By participating in New York City's Retention and Attraction Program, Con Edison of New York fosters the sustainable development in communities by helping new businesses get started and helping other businesses that have suffered accidents or losses to become re-established. During 2008, we worked with more than 80 companies to help them grow. We offer these companies reduced electrical rates, and help them secure grants and business loans from federal, state and local agencies.
Over the past 29 years, Con Edison of New York's RENAISSANCE Housing Program has helped restore 87 housing projects in neighborhoods throughout the city. The RENAISSANCE Housing Program has generated $174.6 million of private-sector reinvestment, enabling the rehabilitation of 2,248 formerly vacant units of the city's multiple-dwelling housing stock. These have all been converted into tenant co-ops, condominiums, or owner-occupied homes, affordable to area residents.
The long-vacant former Esquire Shoe Polish factory, converted to condominiums, is a representative Con Edison of New York RENAISSANCE Housing Program's project. All 77 condominium units sold within one month. Among other services, Con Edison of New York's RENAISSANCE Housing Program helped secure the $7.5 million construction-loan financing for the rehabilitation project.
