Con Edison has an integrated approach to workforce and public safety. We incorporate new or improved technologies to reduce the risks to our employees and the public. We regularly review and update our safety policies and procedures, and we train our employees in classroom sessions and during on-the-job training sessions.
The Environment, Health & Safety Management System
Consistent with the company's commitment to safeguarding its employees and the public, a unified Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) is our blueprint for meeting our goals. This EHSMS is intended to enhance employee awareness of safety issues and defines policies, procedures and resources the company has devoted to health and safety.
Key performance indicators safety index
Con Edison introduced a "safety index" to provide a combination of leading and lagging indicators on safety trends and performance in operations at its regulated utilities. In the past, the OSHA illness/injury incidence rate was the principal barometer of safety performance, one that remains extremely important, but is now incorporated in our safety index along with other key performance indicators. These are:
Significant high-hazard injuries – include electrical, gas, or steam burns, electric shock, or falls from elevations resulting in hospitalization.
Public-safety related equipment failures – subsurface equipment failures accompanied by physical injury to people, and/or property damage.
Contractor OSHA incidence rate – that charts safety performance for contractors engaged in work to support operations
Preventable motor vehicle collisions – covers incidents involving company vehicles
System-safety operating errors – refers to events where mistakes in planning, process, or procedure could have threatened the safety of employees, customers, or the public
Safety strategy/work practice improvements – charts the number of enhancements made to administrative, procedural, and policy-related measures to strengthen safety
Documented field inspections – logs the number of in-the-field safety inspections and observations at company facilities and work sites
We report on the safety index monthly and our performance is tracked against a year-end goal. The safety index shows at a glance how overall safety performance is progressing, and it also provides quick comparison with year-ago performance both on a monthly and year-to-date basis. The safety index is available to all employees as part of a "Corporate Performance Indicator Dashboard."
