Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI)

Con Edison of New York has installed more than 94,000 electric and gas meters in Westchester County that provide remote meter-reading capability. Another 200,000 meters of this kind are in the process of being installed or retrofitted. Both Con Edison utilities have been piloting automated meter reading (AMR) for several years. Rather than needing to have customer field representatives enter customer property to read meters, these units simply transmit their readings by radio. In addition, the electric meters can register and retain 48 five-minute intervals of customer usage data.

The company is now researching the possibility of a more sophisticated system, advanced meter infrastructure (AMI). This infrastructure will allow for the installation of receiver relay units on utility poles to transmit near real-time energy consumption data that allows web access for customers to view their energy use. As an added benefit, the data-gathering infrastructure would supply outage reporting that could help speed service restoration.

With a clearer picture of their own energy-consumption profiles, customers will have another resource to help them make wise energy choices, and conserve more effectively. AMI is one of the most promising technologies for helping customers conserve energy and lower carbon emissions. Con Edison is submitting a filing to the New York Public Service Commission for an AMI pilot project for 58,000 meters.
